Craps can be one of the most confusing games in any casino, and it’s difficult to master the game in one setting. With so many potential bets on the board, it’s easy to get confused. Most players walk to the pit wanting the best possible odds, and there are a few different ways to make this happen. As with most things, the best strategy is to keep it simple when you’re playing craps. You don’t need to play all the bets. Instead, you need to know about a few bets that will leave you with the best chances.
Pass line bets and taking odds
There’s an easy way to get started with your betting. You put down a bet on the pass line. With this bet, you win if the shooter rolls and a seven or an 11. You lose if the shooter rolls a two, three, or a 12. If the shooter rolls any other number, the point is set. At this point, you should take a bet called the “odds.” This requires you to put money behind the pass line. It’s like an additional pass line bet, except that it gives you better odds.
The odds bet is one of the best bets in the casino, and it’s one of the few where the house has virtually no edge. You should betting this at the maximum if you want to have long-term success. The goal with this bet is to have the shooter hit the point. If he hits the point before he rolls a seven, you win both your pass line bet and your odds bet. If the seven comes out, you lose.
In addition to your pass line bet and your odds bet, you might choose to place numbers at any time. If you want to bet that the shooter will hit an eight before he rolls a seven, then you can bet on the eight. Eights and sixes are good bets, and you must be careful not to bet on too many numbers. At any time, you should have no more than three different numbers in play. If you go for more, you are increasing the house edge.
Avoiding the hard way bets
One piece of basic strategy is to avoid hard way bets. These are bets that require the dice to hit an even number by rolling two of the same. For instance, a hard way four bet would require the dice to come with two-two. Though these bets pay well, the house edge is high. You’ll be a long-term loser when you play these.
